01: Wine characteristics and description

Sauvignon Vert has been known from this area since 1600s but has often been over-looked (it’s called Friulano in Italy and only recently became Sauvignon Vert in Brda). This delicious wine is produced from the oldest vines in the whole region at over 90 years old, planted by Marjan’s grandfather, and which give amazing concentration and complexity. It expresses scents of white nectarine, melon, Asian pear, green almond and mountain herbs. The palate shows lovely depth without any heaviness, and intriguing flavours of grapefruit, honeydew, lemon oil, pear, green tea, and fresh herbs. It’s sleek, harmonious and long, completed by subtle mineral notes.

The 2018 vintage began with a cold winter, maintaining low temperatures into the spring. One of its distinctive features was a late spring characterized by frequent rain showers, followed by almost perfect weather conditions. After the cold first three months, we experienced extremely pleasant and warm weather in April and May, during which our vines developed a strong canopy. The excellent weather conditions continued into June, where we encountered a bit more rain than desired, but fortunately, it didn't pose any problems. As a result, the grapes of both white and red varieties achieved optimal ripeness, and the expectations for the 2018 vintage are ambitious. Harvesting commenced a little earlier, yielding extraordinary quantities without compromising quality. Truly, a great vintage.

We experienced a relatively mild winter, providing a favorable start to the new growing season. However, during the flowering of the vines in the last weeks of May, we faced bad weather that lowered the quantities of the 2019 vintage. The hot and very dry summer again contributed to a slightly smaller harvest, but we were pleased with the quality of the grapes. Elevated temperatures in July and August enabled normal berry development, ensuring excellent phenolic maturity. Harvesting occurred through multiple rounds as we carefully sought optimal characteristics for each grape variety.

The growing season in Brda began with mild and dry winter weather. Spring was somewhat cooler, leading to a slightly delayed start of the growing season compared to previous years. Flowering began around June 1st. The cooler temperatures, along with frequent rainfall during late spring and early summer, caused the vines to progress more slowly, but the development was uninterrupted. The summer of 2020 was lovely, characterized by sunny and warm weather, without any concerning heat waves and occasional rain showers that ensured optimal cluster growth and development. Gradual grape ripening took place in excellent conditions, with the right balance of sunlight and occasional rainfall. The harvest began in September and went exceptionally well. As a result, we expect an exceptionally high-quality vintage for both white and red wines. The growing season in Brda began with mild and dry winter weather.
