The family owns 18 hectares of vineyards, some older than 55 years, both on the Slovenian and on the Italian side of the Brda region.
Our vineyards are part of the magnificent Goriška Brda area, which offers ideal climate conditions for growth of our vines. The low hills of Brda open towards the Furlanska lowland that supplies them with warm sea air, considering that the area is only 20-odd kilometres away from the sea. On the other side are the Julian Alps and the Trnovska Plateau to protect them from the influence of the colder mountain climate. Made up of thick layers of marl and sandstone, the soil of Brda is ideal for growing vines, which were first planted here as early as in Roman antiquity.
As our tradition dictates, we grow the vines in a way that lowers the burden on them and allows their grapes to mature to their fullest, which produces a balanced aroma and a richer taste.
The vines are carefully selected by variety. They are planted in intervals, just like in typical Furlanska vineyards. There are various clones that, together, offer the best characteristics of each crop. The raising method allows for the development of vines that are forced to compete between themselves in controlled conditions and to absorb nutritive elements and moisture from the soil. This competitiveness makes the vines strong enough to produce grapes of suitably high quality. The fruit is healthy, sufficiently strong and complex, making the wine more elegant and noble. The crop comes exclusively from our vineyards.
We strive to maintain a strong connection with the vines through all our knowledge and respect for the environment. We remain traditionalists despite the increasing development of wine-growing technology. Work in the vineyard, which results in increased quality (cutting, multiple cleaning of vines, picking of grapes), is done exclusively by hand. We decided several years ago that our vines would be grown using only natural methods, without any chemical fertilisers or insecticides. Experience has taught us that this allows for the preservation of the natural cycle of living organisms in the vineyard and enables the soil and the vines to respond naturally, spontaneously, and to become even more harmonious by overcoming certain problems. This toughens the plants, so they are strong and do not produce a mass of leaves. They channel all their energy into the maturing of healthy grapes with a full taste.
Over the recent years, our white and red wines have been the best indicator of the Brda Terroir. Our goal for the future is to make even better wine and to create the conditions that will allow this to happen. Living in a healthy natural environment with our vineyards is, therefore, a condition we are not prepared to give up.
Our vineyards extend over various locations on the Brdo hills (both on the Slovenian and Italian sides) and over various altitudes, which offers optimum living conditions for the varieties planted there.
